Welcome to the Ortenau

An enchanting natural and cultural landscape characterised by dense forests, sun-blessed vineyard slopes and flowering fields together with world-class wines and cuisine – this is the Ortenau, one of the most popular regions in the Black Forest.

The Ortenau County is part of the Central/Northern Black Forest Nature Reserve, Germany's largest nature reserve, and the Black Forest National Park, the first and only national park in Baden-Württemberg.

Picturesque winemaking villages hug the hills and valleys in the foothills area and farming villages are spread out over the fertile landscape of the Rhine valley. Numerous lakes also came into being here through intensive gravel extraction.

The typical Black Forest postcard images can still be found in many places in the Ortenau: broad sunny valleys such as the Acher, Kinzig, Rench or Schutter Valley which reach many kilometres into the Black Forest, deeply-slanted hipped roofs in Black Forest farmyards and women in their traditional Black Forest costumes. The central ranges of the Black Forest, the towns and the Rhine valley make the Ortenau a real sporting, leisure and recreational paradise. The Europa Park Rust is a crowd-puller well-known beyond the state's borders, Strasbourg is just a stone's-throw away across the Rhine and Baden-Baden is also just around the corner.
